Who we are

Buttonhole is more than just a holiday cottage; it’s a piece of St Ives’ rich maritime history. Situated on Back Road East, our cottage is nestled in the historic “Downalong” area, known for its narrow, cobbled streets and traditional fishermen’s cottages. These quaint homes have been a part of St Ives since the early 19th century, with many constructed around the 1830s.

Our cottage has retained much of its original charm, including the traditional wooden panelling that harks back to its seafaring past. During renovations, we discovered a newspaper from the 1920s tucked behind the old fireplace, along with vintage tiles that spelt out “Buttonhole” (shown below) when pieced together. These hidden treasures offer a tangible connection to the lives of the fishermen and their families who once called this place home.

Staying at Buttonhole offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of old St Ives, where the legacy of the fishing community is still palpable in the architecture and narrow lanes of Downalong.
